About Information Warfare

Overview
A core element of modern naval power, Information Warfare (IW) is the integrated employment of Navy’s information-based capabilities (Communications, Networks, Intelligence, Oceanography, Meteorology, Cryptology, Electronic Warfare, Cyberspace Operations, and Space) to degrade, deny, deceive, or destroy an enemy’s information environment or to enhance the effectiveness of friendly operations.

Mission
Defeat any enemy by using Assured Command and Control, Battlespace Awareness, and Integrated Fires to achieve Freedom of Maneuver across all warfighting domains

Background
The Information Warfare Community, originally known as the Information Dominance Corps, was created within the U.S. Navy in 2009 to more effectively and collaboratively lead and manage officers, enlisted, and civilian professionals who possess extensive skills in information-intensive related fields. This corps of professionals works, trains and is educated in information, intelligence, counterintelligence, human-derived information, cyber, space, and oceanographic disciplines. It is tasked with developing and delivering dominant information capabilities in support of U.S. Navy, Joint and national warfighting requirements.

Navy Information Warfare Community
Provides three core capabilities of Assured Command and Control, Battlespace Awareness, and Integrated Fires; which are central for All Domain Access and the Electromagnetic Maneuver Warfare (EMW) concept.

Specialities
Information Professionals
Operate, defend, integrate, plan, maintain, and acquire networks, communications and combat systems integral to mission assurance in all warfare areas and across all domains.
Intelligence
Conduct full spectrum intelligence operations to develop a deep understanding of adversary capabilities, intentions, and activities in time and space; provide timely, relevant, and predictive all-source assessments to create warfighting options at the tactical, operational and strategic level.
Cryptologic Warfare
Provide expertise in cryptology, space, signals intelligence, cyberspace operations, and electronic warfare to insure freedom of action while achieving military objectives in and through the electromagnetic spectrum, cyberspace, and space.
Naval Meteorology & Oceanography
Collect, process and exploit oceanographic, meteorological, hydrographic, precise time and astrometric information to enable Naval and Joint Force Commanders to operate safely and make better decisions faster than their adversaries.
Maritime Space Officers
Maritime Space Officers (MSOs) are the Navy's space operations professionals, tasked with integrating joint space capabilities into maritime plans and operations. MSO community is built through the lateral transfer process with billets ranging from O4 to O6. MSOs fill space planning and operations billets at Fleet Maritime Operations Centers (MOCs), joint commands, the intelligence community, naval warfighting development centers, the Naval War College, and staff positions to support operations.
Maritime Cyber Warfare Officers
Maritime Cyber Warfare Officers (MCWOs) are experts in Cyberspace Operations (CSO) focused on both Offensive Cyberspace Operations (OCO) and Defensive Cyberspace Operations (DCO).  MCWOs will conduct repeat operational and leadership tours within the Cyber Operation Force (COF) and Cyber Mission Force (CMF), including tours on National Mission Teams (NMTs), Cyber Mission Teams (CMTs), Cyber Protection Teams (CPTs), and Cyber Support Teams (CSTs).
